DESCRIPTION:*Abstract:* This presentation has two main parts. The first qu
 estions two of the underlying principles of conventional transport plannin
 g on travel as a derived demand and on travel cost minimisation. It sugges
 ts that the existing paradigm ought to be more flexible\, particularly if 
 the sustainable mobility agenda is to become a reality. The second part ar
 gues that policy measures are available to improve urban sustainability in
  transport terms but that the main challenges relate to the necessary cond
 itions for change. These conditions are dependent upon high-quality implem
 entation of innovative schemes\, and the need to gain public confidence an
 d acceptability to support these measures through active involvement and a
 ction.\n\n*Biography:* David Banister is Professor of Transport Studies at
  Oxford University and Director of the Transport Studies Unit. Until 2006\
 , he was Professor of Transport Planning at University College London. He 
 has also been Research Fellow at the Warren Centre in the University of Sy
 dney (2001-2002) on the Sustainable Transport for a Sustainable City proje
 ct\, was Visiting VSB Professor at the Tinbergen Institute in Amsterdam (1
 994-1997)\, and Visiting Professor at the University of Bodenkultur in Vie
 nna in 2007. He was Acting Director of the Environmental Change Institute 
 at Oxford University (2009-2010). He has published 19 books\, 150 papers i
 n\nrefereed journals and a further 250 papers on all topics related to tra
 nsport\, environment and cities.
