DESCRIPTION:The success of simple advection-condensation models at simulat
ing the distribution of atmospheric water vapor indicates that that distri
bution is primarily controlled by the large-scale temperature and circulat
ion. This suggests in turn that the influence of microphysical effects is
small - but how small? In particular\, can condensate evaporation be safel
y neglected\, and in what circumstances? Do local effects such as supersat
uration play an important role globally? This talk will summarize three pr
ojects aimed at providing additional constraints on these problems\, using
both satellite observations and model results. Particular attention will
be paid to the tropical upper troposphere\, subtropical dry zones\, and tr
 oposphere-to-stratosphere transport.
