DESCRIPTION:Man generally lubricates with oil. Nature lubricates with wat
er and polymers (proteins\, polysaccharides). By immobilizing polymers on
surfaces in various ways\, it is possible to imitate nature and lubricate
in an aqueous medium. Furthermore\, by anchoring oil-soluble polymers to
surfaces\, lubricity in an oil medium can be enhanced. Various ways of do
ing this have been explored in our laboratory over the last decade\, invol
ving both the attachment of polymers to surfaces as well as the growth of
polymers from surfaces via various controlled-radical-polymerization appro
 aches.
