Rendezvous - Ed Hartley (University of Cambridge)

DESCRIPTION:Rendezvous is an important part of current and future space mi
ssions. For example\, in the Mars Sample Return (MSR) mission\, there wil
l be a rendezvous and capture manoeuvre in a Mars orbit where a passive co
ntainer containing a soil sample must be captured by an orbiting chaser cr
aft. There is strong motivation to perform such manoeuvres autonomously d
ue to long communication delays\, and tight tolerances. In addition\, thr
uster propellant is a finite resource so must be used efficiently.\n\nThis
talk will present the design and implementation of a model predictive con
trol (MPC) system to autonomously perform a spacecraft rendezvous and capt
ure operation from the point of target detection all the way until target
capture. Propellant consumption is actively minimised in the presence of
physical and operational constraints through the use of constrained optimi
 sation.
