DESCRIPTION:We discuss the abstract problem of how to cache valuable mater
 ial at a number of locations so that\, if some of these are destroyed or p
 ilfered\, what remains is likely to be sufficient for survival.  We briefl
 y\ndescribe the general mathematical formulation\, but then adapt the mode
 l to the problem faced by scatter-hoarders who choose the location and dep
 th of\nthe cache\, subject to a limit on total digging. This is joint work
  with Nicky Clayton\, Tom Lidbetter and Robbert Fokkink.
