DESCRIPTION:Recent research at BAE SYSTEMS Advanced Technology Centre has 
 been driven by the requirement to reduce the weight of armour system.  Tak
 ing a multi functional approach\, armour systems have been studied which t
 hrough a combination of high shock loading and energy dissipation have the
  potential to offer significant weight reduction compared to current syste
 ms with the same level of protection.  Experimental results and observatio
 ns\, using high speed optical and flash X-ray imaging\, will be presented 
 from laboratory based impact tests on novel systems with the equivalent pe
 rformance to 50mm of rolled homogeneous armour steel.
