DESCRIPTION:Size effects are important as results from small coupons are o
ften used as the basis for design of large structures. Strength of carbon
fibre composites tends to decrease with specimen size\, and failure to ac
count properly for this effect could lead to non-conservative designs. Re
sults will be presented of an experimental programme to investigate the ef
fect of specimen size on the tensile strength and failure mechanisms of un
notched and notched carbon fibre laminates. Finite element analysis using
cohesive zone interface elements is able to represent the experimentally o
bserved damage development\, and gives excellent predictions for scaling e
ffects on notched strength over a wide range of different laminates and si
