DESCRIPTION:*Abstract:* Prof. Fernandez will be presenting work on the stu
dy of the resource consumption of cities. This work utilises an industrial
ecology framework to specify resource intensity measures\, spatially loca
ted and attributed to sectors of the urban economy. This emerging framewor
k defines an urban metabolism that captures the complex dynamics of city s
ystems.\n\n*Biography:* John E. Fernández has been a professor of buildin
g technology and architectural design in the Department of Architecture at
MIT since 2000. His research work focuses on the materials of the built e
nvironment. The first phase of this work sought to reveal the potential ap
plication of non-traditional materials for the next generation of building
design. The second phase seeks to address the enormous volume of material
extraction and consumption that is devoted to the built environment. This
second research program has led to the development of theemerging field o
f urban metabolism – the study of resource flows required of contemporar
 y cities.
