DESCRIPTION:Current nuclear reactors use uranium and plutonium created fro
 m uranium as their fuel. Although the technology demonstrably works\, it i
 s not without its downsides: concerns about safety\, nuclear proliferation
  and the nature of the waste produced. This talk will explore an alternati
 ve nuclear technology that uses thorium rather than uranium and discuss it
 s advantages and its challenges.\n\nGeoff Parks received his BA in Enginee
 ring from Cambridge University in 1984 and his PhD in Nuclear Engineering 
 in 1989. He became a University Lecturer at the start of 1996 and is now a
  Senior Lecturer.
