DESCRIPTION:LfL is delighted to welcome Jonathan Jansen to Cambridge in Ap
 ril to talk about his experiences in South Africa as the first black dean 
 of education and what it meant to confront deep seated racism among his st
 udents and colleagues. His book Knowledge in the Blood: Confronting Race a
 nd the Apartheid Past is a compelling account of the struggle to change hi
 s students uncompromising world view but in the process\, as he tried to s
 ee the world through their eyes\, coming to reframe his own understanding.
  It is a testimony to his humility as a leader that he was able to listen 
 and learn from the most vitriolic of white students and keep alive the dia
 logue however abhorrent at times those views might be.       \n \nJonathan
  Jansen is Vice-Chancellor and Rector of the University of the Free State\
 , Honorary Professor of Education at the University of the Witwatersrand a
 nd Visiting Fellow at the National Research Foundation\, South Africa. He 
 was a Fulbright Scholar to Stanford University (2007-2008)\, former Dean o
 f Education at the University of Pretoria (2001-2007)\, and holds Honorary
  Doctorates from the University of Edinburgh and the University of Clevela
 nd\, USA.\n
