DESCRIPTION:The human mind represents number in different formats. We coun
t and estimate\, but we also do algebra\, trigonometry and calculus. Diffe
rent kinds of computation have been proposed to account for these differen
t abilities\, in particular\, those which have also been found naturally i
n nonverbal human infants and nonlinguistic animals. Here we will review t
wo models proposed to account for these natural abilities\, and will prese
nt some data to support them. We will discuss the entailments of these pro
 posals.
