DESCRIPTION:Geotechnical Engineers have to design safe\, economic and serv
iceable foundations and retaining walls. Engineers use design codes to gui
de them in this endeavour. Sadly many design codes focus too much on the p
revention of collapse and not enough on the design of a serviceable\, econ
omic structure. With pressure to reduce the amount of embodied energy and
carbon in civil infrastructure\, geotechnical engineers should focus on de
velopment of better methods to compute differential settlement which is th
e major cause of structural 'failure'. If these are available then the lev
els of conservatism in standard designs can be more scientifically determi
ned. \nSoil-stress strain databases are presented and their use in design
examples is shown. Databases are suggested as an alternative to probabilis
tic methods in dealing with variability of soil properties.\n
