DESCRIPTION:Associated to every stationary extremal black hole is a unique
near-horizon geometry. These spacetimes are more tractable to analyze and
crucially\, retain properties of the parent black hole. We consider the c
lassification of near-horizon geometries in theories of gravity coupled to
abelian gauge fields and uncharged scalars in four and five dimensions\,
with one and two commuting rotational symmetries respectively. Assuming th
at the theory of gravity may be cast as a 3d non-linear sigma model (as is
typically the case for ungauged supergravities)\, we show that the functi
onal form of any such near-horizon geometry may be determined. We apply th
is to five dimensional minimal supergravity\, focusing on the near-horizon
geometries of yet to be found extremal black rings.
