DESCRIPTION:Haemophilus parasuis is an early colonizer of piglets and the
etiological agent of Glasser’s disease. Many factors influence the balan
ce between colonization and pathology and only a fraction of farms actuall
y develops clinical disease. These factors include management procedures\,
presence of other pathogens or degree of virulence of the strains of H. p
arasuis in the farm. H. parasuis strains are very heterogeneous and\, for
diagnosis and control\, it is important to differentiate between non-virul
ent (colonizers) and virulent strains. Our laboratory has found genetic di
fferences that correlate with differences in functional assays. We have id
entified a family of trimeric autotransporters with potential use in diagn
osis and vaccination against disease by H. parasuis.
