DESCRIPTION:The market-value of wheat is hugely dependent on protein conte
nt of grain. Attempts to increase the protein content by fertiliser additi
on and breeding have been successful\, but the underlying metabolic pathwa
ys remain undefined. A novel pathway has been proposed in which pyruvate\
,orthophosphate dikinase (PPDK) plays a crucial role in nitrogen remobilis
ation from leaves to seeds during senescence. I am trying to elucidate the
N remobilisation pathway and investigating the role of PPDK in wheat by c
haracterising it in wild-type wheat as well as generating and phenotyping
lines that over-express PPDK during senescence.
