DESCRIPTION:Inositol hexakisphosphate (IP6)\, more commonly known as phyta
te\, is a major store of phosphate in seeds and tubers. Low phytate crops
have been engineered to abate the negative biological and environmental ef
fects of this compound\, however it is apparent that phytate is involved i
n more than just storage. Recent work has shown it is a key signalling com
ponent in responses to biotic and abiotic stresses. This should be conside
red in future research if we are to reduce the negative effects of phytate
without also impacting resilience to biological and environmental factors
. My project focuses on investigating the regulation of key IP6 biosynthes
is enzymes and the role of IP6 itself in controlling responses to biotic a
nd abiotic stresses in the world's third most important crop\, potato.\n
