DESCRIPTION:Conical cells and diffraction gratings have been shown to infl
uence the optical properties of flowers in a number of monocot and eudicot
species. Diffraction gratings are a source of structural colour and iride
scence in both plants and animals. They have been well characterised in an
imals but remain poorly understood in plants. My project focuses on the in
cidence of diffraction gratings and conical cells in the earliest divergin
g angiosperms and explores the genetic basis of their development. It also
investigates the role of diffraction gratings in the attraction of insect
  pollinators.\n
