DESCRIPTION:Black holes\, regions within which gravity is so intense that
even light cannot escape\, are amongst the most interesting objects in the
known universe. Owing to their nature\, they can only be studied via thei
r interactions with other matter. I will briefly review some of the observ
ational methods available for detecting black holes\, and what we can hope
to learn about them using X-ray observations.
