DESCRIPTION:The moduli space of stable cubic surfaces is isomorphic to a q
 uotient of the\n4-ball by an arithmetic group.  The isomorphism is given b
 y a period map.\nLittle is known about explicit values of the period map. 
  In this talk we\nexamine some properties of the period map and its invers
 e.   We give\ncharacterizations of cubic surfaces\nwith certain special pe
 riods corresponding to\ncomplex multiplication.  We also discuss an explic
 it inverse to the period map.\nThis is joint work with Jim Carlson.
