DESCRIPTION:Phased arrays provide a cost effective way to provide the larg
est collecting area required for SKA era radio telescopes operating below
1.4 GHz. Time and direction dependent effects (TDDEs) can have a signific
ant impact on the performance of these instruments due to their wide field
of view. These TDDEs should therefore be dealt with in an opportune mann
er by the calibration and imaging processes. In this presentation\, I sho
w that a model based approach using a full array matrix formulation of the
measurement equation provides a convenient framework to address these iss
ues. I show how the calibration and imaging challenges are handled in thi
s framework and illustrate this by examples based on actual LOFAR station
data. I conclude my presentation with some open issues and routes that ar
e being explored to handle them.
