DESCRIPTION:Many philosophers (and very many cognitive scientists) think o
 f mental states as purely physical phenomena. This thesis in metaphysics i
 mplies that the physical determines the mental. According to a priori phys
 icalism\, the determination is a priori. How then can we explain why Mary 
 fails to know what it is like to see red? I give the representationalist's
  answer to this question.
