DESCRIPTION:Clouds and jets of particles settling under the action of grav
ity in an otherwise pure liquid are investigated both experimentally and n
umerically. These two particulate systems can be unstable even in the comp
lete absence of inertia. A cloud of particles slowly evolves into a torus
which breaks up into secondary droplets which deform into tori themselves
in a repeating cascade while a jet of particles develops varicose modulat
ion of its diameter at low volume fractions. The discrete nature of the pa
rticles is fundamental in the understanding of these instabilities.\n\nThi
s work has been done in collaboration with Jason Butler\, Maria Ekiel-Jeż
 ewska\, Bloen Metzger\, Maxime Nicolas\, Joontaek Park\, Florent Pignatel\
 , David Saintillan.
