DESCRIPTION:In this talk I look back to a (then) new Java security archite
cture\nthat was designed 15 years ago and is now standard across all Java
platforms\,\nand draw lessons from that experience. For example\, design s
ecurity\ntechnologies that are appropriate for the target set of "customer
s" (e.g.\,\nprogrammer or users?)\; manage the constant conflicts between
the want (of the\nenforcers) to protect and the desire (of the enforced) f
or freedom\; and\nwhy lasting impact is often practical rather than theore
tical\, given that no\nuseful security is absolute. This will not be a typ
ical research talk\, but I\nwill throw in some anecdotal stories to (try)
make it worthwhile.\n\nBio. Li Gong was in the PhD program at the Computer
Lab from 1987 till 1990. He\nhad a flourishing research career before joi
ning the newly formed JavaSoft in\n1996 to become Chief Java Security Arch
itect and led the design and\nimplementation of a new Java security archit
ecture that is now in common use\ntoday. His corporate career included gen
eral manager of Sun Microsystems China\nR&D center\, general manager of th
e online division of MSN in China for\nMicrosoft\, and now CEO of Mozilla
Online Ltd.\, the Beijing-based subsidiary of\nthe Mozilla Corporation. He
also has an entrepreneurial side and participated\nin a number of startup
s in the Sillicon Valley and in China.\n\nHe served as both Program Chair
and General Conference Chair for ACM CCS\, IEEE\nS&P\, and IEEE CSFW. He w
as Associate Editor of ACM TISSEC and Associate\nEditor-in-Chief of IEEE I
nternet Computing. He held visiting positions at\nCornell and Stanford\, a
nd was a Guest Chair Professor at Tsinghua University\,\nBeijing. He has 1
4 issued US patents (2 of which were among the 7 patents that\nOracle cite
 d in the lawsuit against Google in August 2010)\, co-authored 3 books\n(pu
blished by Addison Wesley and O’Reilly) and many technical articles\, an
d\nreceived the 1994 Leonard G. Abraham Award given by the IEEE Communicat
ions\nSociety for “the most significant contribution to technical litera
ture in the\nfield of interest of the IEEE.”\n
