  be given by Professor Christopher Bishop\, Distinguished Scientist\, Micr
 osoft Research Cambridge on 12 May 2011 at 5:30pm.\n\nLast November\, Micr
 osoft released a revolution in computer gaming: Kinect for Xbox 360.  This
  3D camera technology allows users to control games using their entire bod
 y\, without holding or wearing anything special.  Kinect sold over 8 milli
 on units in the first two months\, and has been heralded as the fastest-se
 lling consumer electronics device in history.  This talk traces the fascin
 ating story of how Kinect was created\, and explores the science behind th
 e technology. It also highlights the role of basic research as a driver of
