DESCRIPTION:*ABSTRACT*\n\n\nIn the area of numerical cognition many schola
rs believe in the existence of an innate number sense. This number sense i
s based on the ability to count and to estimate quantities. We examine a r
elatively neglected aspect of performance - the ability to perceive and ev
aluate sizes or amounts. We suggest that this might be a more primitive sy
stem that has been used throughout the years as the basis for the developm
ent of the number sense and numerical abilities. We present behavioral dat
a regarding the ability to evaluate sizes in humans\, some preliminary exp
eriments in life forms with a low-level brain system (i.e.\, the Archer fi
sh)\, and preliminary ideas with evolutionary computation.\n\nFor more inf
