DESCRIPTION:The seminar will describe recent attempts to model magnetic fi
elds in the\nsolar corona using the non-linear force-free approximation. T
o begin with\na new global model which is based on observational data will
be described.\nThe model is designed to simulate the large-scale evolutio
n of\nphotospheric and coronal magnetic fields on the Sun over long\nperio
ds of time (weeks-months).Once the construction of the model is\ndiscussed
two tests of the model are carried out. First it is tested with\nobservat
ions of the hemispheric pattern of solar filaments and secondly\nwith IMF
measurements of the Sun's Open Flux. Following on from\nthis non-linear fo
rce-free simulations are carried out of the dispersal of\nan active region
. Results show that small scale convective motions may\nprovide sufficient
energy to explain the radiative losses in the corona.\nFinally future app
lications of the model will be discussed.\n
