DESCRIPTION:The last decade has witnessed a most significant and ambitious
  reform in\nmathematics curriculum in China in relation to structure\, aim
 s and objectives\,\ncontent coverage\, textbook development\, classroom in
 struction and student\nassessment. This colloquium will present an overvie
 w of this reform\, and discuss\nrelevant issues encountered during the ref
 orm process. Particular attention will be paid to the strengths and weakne
 sses of the traditional Chinese classroom practices and how teaching and l
 earning has been affected by the recent curriculum reforms.\nThe speaker w
 ill also discuss the so-called "Chinese Learner Paradox" and why Shanghai 
 students were the best performers in the recent PISA study.
