DESCRIPTION:Early blindness is a dramatic example of cortical plasticity w
 hich results in a wide-ranging set of changes that include changes in syna
 ptic connectivity\, wide-scale changes in the functional response properti
 es of occipital cortex\, and improved processing of auditory and tactile i
 nformation. I will discuss how recent work done by our laboratory and othe
 rs is moving us towards an integrated understanding of the neuroanatomical
  and behavioral effects of human blindness.
