DESCRIPTION:Michael Wright\nHalley VI Lead Structural Engineer and Design
Project Manager\, AECOM\n\nThe current station at Halley is on a floating
ice shelf with an increased risk that it will break off as a giant iceberg
. So the race is on to design and the build a new station on the right sid
e of the calving line. \n\nThe British Antarctic Survey (BAS)\, launched a
n architectural competition in June 2004 to select a design for the new st
ation that must be able to lift itself out of the one metre of snow accumu
lation that occurs each year\, and have the ability to relocate during its
life.\n\nThat is the challenge. BAS thought the best way to understand co
nditions there was to send one of the design team to experience this remar
kable continent at first hand. This is the subject of my talk – the desi
gn competition\, the trip to Antarctica and the winning design.\n
