DESCRIPTION:I shall explain a new approach for the Toledo invariant from t
 he Higgs bundle point of view\, coming from group theoretic properties of 
 Hermitian symmetric spaces. This approach covers all cases uniformly\, inc
 luding the exceptional ones. I shall give some applications.\n\nJoint work
  with O. Garca-Prada and R. Rubio.\n\n
