plications - Dr. Hernán Míguez\, Institute of Materials Science of Sevil

DESCRIPTION:In recent times\, several synthetic pathways have been develop
ed to create multilayered materials of diverse composition that combine ac
cessible porosity and optical properties of structural origin\, i.e.\, not
related to absorption. These materials posses a refractive index that var
ies periodically along one direction\, which give rise to optical interfer
ence effects characteristic of Bragg stacks or one-dimensional photonic cr
ystals (1DPC). The technological potential of such porous optical material
s has recently been demonstrated in various fields such as biological and
chemical sensing\, photovoltaics\, or radiation shielding. In all cases\,
improved performance is achieved as a result of the added functionality po
rosity brings on. Also\, they offer the possibility to study fundamental l
ight absorption and emission phenomena in materials that could not be inte
grated in photonic structures before\, as well as to develop environmental
ly responsive coatings with them. In this seminar\, a unified picture of t
his emerging field is provided\, special emphasis being put both in the op
portunities it offers in the fields of energy\, sensing and radiation prot
 ection.
