DESCRIPTION:In this paper I provide a conceptual framework that allows to 
 intuitively define two doctrines - non-reductive physicalism and non-reduc
 tive materialism - that are consistent with the intuitions of emergentists
 . In particular\, it allows to understand the two basic emergentist strate
 gies to develop a middle ground between reductive physicalism and substanc
 e dualism.
