DESCRIPTION:For the Cambridge Intellectual Seminar on Tuesday 24th May\, w
 e are pleased to have distinguished guests from the State Council of China
 \, including Mr CHEN Heliang (陈鹤良)\, the Deputy Director of Counselo
 rs’ Office of the State Council (国务院参事室副主任)\, and Mr S
 HU Yi (舒乙)\, from the Central Research Institute of Culture and Histro
 y (中央文史研究馆)\, who is the son of a highly celebrated Chinese 
 writer Lao She (老舍1899-1966). \n\nThe Cambridge Intellectual Seminar (
 剑智讲坛) is designed to be long-term series to discuss the various ph
 enomena in contemporary China\, to summarize the experience of China’s s
 uccess\, and to provide theoretical interpretations and policy recommendat
 ions to addressing developmental problems in China. The key speakers will 
 all be distinguished guests with high profile and acknowledged expertise i
 n their own academic areas. \n\nVenue: Pavilion Room\, Hughes Hall CB1 2EW

 N Heliang\n\nMajored in Jounalism Studies and graduated from Chinese Langu
 age Department\, Peking University in 1982. He is currently the Deputy Dir
 ector of Counselors’ Office of the State Council\, People’s Republic o
 f China.\n\nThe Counselors’ Office of the State Council is the consultat
 ive organization directly under the State Council. Counselors of the State
  Council are appointed by the Premier. Many of them are democratic parties
 ’ members\, non-party personages\, well-known experts and scholars\, and
  public figures who have high reputation and great influence in China. The
  basic responsibilities of counselors are: participating in and commenting
  on state affairs\, offering advice\, proposals and consultation on import
 ant issues of the State\, engaging in the united front work\, and promotin
 g friendship.\n\n\nSHU Yi\n\nManchu\, son of Lao She (SHU Qingchun)\, who 
 is one of the most significant figures of 20th Century Chinese literature.
  As a member of the National Committee of CPPCC\, he has strived to preser
 ve the ancient sites and cultural heritage. He is also a member of the Cen
 tral Research Institute of Culture and History\, and consultant of China L
 ao She Research Centre. He has 13 books published\, including ’My Kite
 ’\, ’Lao She’ and ’Borderless Love’. He is also specialized in C
 hinese painting.\n\nThe Central Research Institute of Culture and History 
 was established at the initiative of Mao Zedong. It’s members are appoin
 ted by the Premier.\n
