DESCRIPTION:Development involves highly oriented cell behaviours\, such as
anisotropic growth and asymmetric cell divisions. It is unclear how thes
e orientations are specified and how they lead to particular cellular or t
issue outcomes. We have been addressing this problem using a combination o
f genetic\, morphological\, computational and imaging approaches in collab
oration with Andrew Bangham (University of East Anglia) and Przemyslaw Pru
sinkiewicz (Calgary). The results provide new insights into how genes int
eract to specify orientations of growth and division\, leading to particul
ar shapes and cell lineage patterns. The talk will illustrate how integrat
ing biological and computational methods may lead to a quantitative mechan
 istic framework for development. \n
