o be learnt from primary school teachers - Dr Ian Abrahams

CONTACT:Ann Waterman
DESCRIPTION:The seminar will draw on recent research\, including the just
completed evaluation of the Getting Practical: Improving Practical Work in
Science (IPWiS) project\, that found that much of what currently takes pl
ace in secondary school practical lessons can be characterised as being es
sentially ‘hands-on’ but ‘minds-off’. It will also discuss the int
eresting (and unexpected) IPWiS evaluation finding that teachers of primar
y science are more effective in getting learners to think about\, and use\
, scientific words and ideas in practical lessons than their secondary col
leagues and the important role that empathy appears to play in this and wh
at secondary teachers might learn from this.
