DESCRIPTION:The subject of the seminar is “The future of the world in fo
ur objects”\, which we were inspired to use because of the marvellous se
ries on Radio 4\, "The History of the World in 100 objects" and because it
takes forward the themes of previous years’ seminars. We are very plea
sed that Mr Mark Damazer\, Master of St Peter’s College\, Oxford and for
merly Controller of Radio 4 (who commissioned the radio series)\, has agre
ed to chair the event. The speakers include:\n\n* Dr David Cleevely\, a t
elecommunications entrepreneur and Founding Director\, Centre for Science
and Policy\, University of Cambridge\, on advances in communications\n* Pr
ofessor Anthony Kelly\, Department of Materials Science and Metallurgy\, U
niversity of Cambridge\, on composites\n* Professor Roger Pedersen\, Cambr
idge Institute for Medical Research (CIMR)\, on stem cells\n\nThey will ea
ch choose an object as a "hook" for their presentation.\n\nEarlier seminar
s have looked at climate change\, narratives of risk\, the survival of the
human race and the geopolitical tensions generated by the hunger for natu
ral resources and the differing economic and political paths to growth. W
e felt that the next seminar should try to draw together some of the leadi
ng technological and scientific developments and set them in a macro- and
micro-political context. Hence the speakers will be a mix of experts in s
cientific and sociological disciplines.\n\nThe seminar will take the form
of four relatively brief presentations from the speakers\, after which the
re will be a lively question and answer session involving the audience.
The audience is drawn from a broad range of alumni\, the College’s ‘Co
rporate Partners’\, government\, media\, academics and students. The se
minar will run over the late afternoon in the Queen’s Building\, Emmanue
l College\, followed by a reception and dinner in Pembroke.\n
LOCATION:Queen's Building\, Emmanuel College\, 4 pm (refreshments from 3.1
5 pm) followed by dinner in Pembroke College at 8 pm
