DESCRIPTION:This study examines public rationales about justice and burden
-sharing\nin climate change mitigation and adaptation policy. What argume
nts\nabout justice resonate from a mitigation perspective\, which ones are
\ndominant from an adaptation perspective\, and what might this suggest\na
bout the contours of politically acceptable climate policy? Using\nthink-
aloud protocols and a structured elicitation approach with\nmembers of the
lay public\, this study provides evidence that the two\ntypes of climate
policy trigger different sets of arguments about\njustice. When asked abo
ut mitigation burden-sharing participants\noverwhelmingly depending on arg
uments about causality. In contrast\, in\ndiscussions of adaptation partic
ipants emphasized ideas of need and\nability\, and used social and spatial
distance to modify the allocation\nof responsibility.
