DESCRIPTION:Anisotropic properties of the material transport by mesoscale
eddies and eddy-driven zonal jets are examined here through the analysis o
f Lagrangian particle trajectories. These trajectories are calculated in a
hierarchy of numerical simulations\, as well as using velocity estimates
from satellite altimetry. The resulting spreading rates (defined here as h
alf the rate of change in the particle dispersion) in the zonal direction
systematically and significantly exceed the meridional ones. The analysis
further demonstrates that this anisotropy is primarily due to the action o
f the transient eddies that are elongated in the zonal direction.
