DESCRIPTION:Professor Erica Chenoweth discusses her book with Maria Stepha
n\, "Why Civil Resistance Works: The Strategic Logic of Nonviolent Conflic
t." In this groundbreaking book\, the authors find that between 1900 and 2
006\, campaigns of nonviolent resistance were more than twice as effective
as their violent counterparts. Attracting impressive support from citizen
s that helps separate regimes from their main sources of power\, these cam
paigns have produced remarkable results.\n\nCombining statistical analysis
with case studies of specific countries and territories\, Chenoweth and S
tephan detail the factors enabling such campaigns to succeed--and\, at tim
es\, causing them to fail. They find that nonviolent resistance presents f
ewer obstacles to moral and physical involvement\, information and educati
on\, and participator commitment. Higher levels of participation then cont
ribute to enhanced resilience\, a greater probability of tactical innovati
on\, increased opportunity for civic disruption (and therefore less incent
ive for the regime to maintain\nthe status quo)\, and shifts in loyalty am
ong opponents’ erstwhile supporters\, including members of the military
establishment. Successful nonviolent resistance movements tend to usher in
more durable and internally peaceful democracies\, which are less likely
to regress into civil war. This book originally and systematically compare
s violent and nonviolent outcomes in different historical periods and geog
raphical contexts\, debunking the myth that violence occurs because of str
uctural and environmental factors and is necessary to achieve certain poli
tical goals. Instead\, Chenoweth and Stephan find violent insurgency is ra
rely justifiable on strategic grounds.\n\nThe talk will be chaired by Dr M
 ette Eilstrup-Sangiovanni.
