DESCRIPTION:The drilling and blasting method has been widely and cost-effe
ctively used in the construction of tunnels particularly through hard rock
 s. Unfortunately\, its use is often restricted in urban areas because of b
lasting-induced vibration and noise. This study presents an innovative vib
ration-reduced excavation method which combines the conventional blasting
technique with the abrasive waterzet-aided precutting of a tunnel perimete
 r. Experimental tests and three dimensional numerical simulations are perf
ormed to demonstrate the feasibility of this method. When the new method i
s used in practice\, it is expected that the construction cost will decrea
se due to a decrease in the number of drilling holes\, explosive charging
 weight\, overbreak space\, and excavation-damaged zone\, which enhances th
e safety of tunnel construction and ultimately minimizes public claims.
