DESCRIPTION:Using the deepest and most complete observations of distant ga
laxies\,\nwe investigate how large disks could have been formed. Observati
 ons\ninclude spatially-resolved kinematics\, detailed morphologies and\nph
otometry from UV to mid-IR. Six billions years ago\, half of the\npresent-
day spirals were experiencing major mergers\, evidenced by\ntheir anomalou
s kinematics and morphologies as well as their\nrelatively high gas fracti
ons. They are consequently modelled using\nthe state of the art hydrodynam
ics models. This leads to a new channel\nof disk formation\, e.g. disks re
formed after gas-rich mergers\, which\ncan be compared to predictions from
the LCDM model.\nThe scenario can be ultimately compared to properties of
  nearby\ngalaxies\, including the Milky Way\, M31 and galaxies showing\nul
tra-faint\, gigantic structures in their haloes.
