DESCRIPTION:I will explain how to analyze the resolvent of the Laplacian o
 n conformally compact spaces by transforming the spectral family to a fami
 ly of operators on a compact manifold without boundary. One easy consequen
 ce of this approach is high energy estimates for the resolvent\, uniform i
 n strips\, which are crucial\, for instance\, for understanding the decay 
 of waves. The methods involved are also applicable in many other settings.
