DESCRIPTION:Engineering is about optimization. Until comparatively recentl
y there was some doubt as to whether software really was an engineering ma
terial\; why would one want to optimise something that could be made\nperf
ect by pure logical reasoning? A consequence of this doubt was that many w
ondered whether there was such a thing as "Software Engineering". More rec
ently\, many have come to realise that\, above a certain\nscale\, reasonin
g about programs gives way to software engineering. Neither software produ
cts nor the processes that produce them are perfect\, yet they are relied
upon. How can we manage this situation? In\nthis talk\, I will explain on
e approach to Software Engineering\, grounded strongly in an optimisation
world-view of engineering that has come to be known as "Search Based Softw
 are Engineering (SBSE)
