emo_v0.9.mp4\n\nLUDD is an internal Cisco research project begun in 2008\,
with the goal of research into new approaches to delivering fault toleran
t software for core routers. As core routers (the highest performance rout
ers in the Internet) may not be familiar to some\, we begin with an archit
ectural overview of core routers and how they are used in the network. We
then describe how software features are currently delivered\, and describe
the new models of software delivery and services we are exploring. An imp
ortant point is the impact of these new models on the reliability\, availa
bility and maintainability of future core routers.\nWe close with a discus
sion of example LUDD engagements with universities\, researchers\, and stu
dents in exploring and evaluating the new models.\n\n\nBio: Robert Broberg
is currently a Distinguished Engineer at Cisco Systems. His career has sp
anned the networking industry since 1984. Key team contributions include t
he introduction of Internet capable PCs in 1986 through the electrical/opt
ical shift for Internet traffic. In addition to his work at Cisco\, Robert
has worked at Bell Laboratories\, Ungermann-Bass and AYR in key contribut
ing positions\, and through many paradigm shifts in the Internet. \n\nRobe
rt's main current research interest is fault tolerant versioning systems a
s they apply to large scale Internet systems. Some documentation of his re
cent work is available at r3.cis.upenn.edu.\n
