DESCRIPTION:We consider the relativistic Vlasov-Maxwell system of equation
 s which\ndescribes the evolution of a collisionless charged plasma. We sho
 w\nthat under rather general conditions\, one can test for linear\ninstabi
 lity by checking the spectral properties of Schrodinger-type\noperators th
 at act only on the spatial variable\, not the full phase\nspace. This exte
 nds previous results that show linear and nonlinear\nstability and instabi
 lity in more restrictive settings.
