DESCRIPTION:The implementation of pharmacogenomic knowledge has been slow\
, and the pace of such implementation has been disappointing to many. The
barriers to implementation are multiple\, and include scientific\, financ
ial\, and technical barriers. Although the quantity of scientific publica
tions in pharmacogenomics is increasing at an exponential rate\, the quali
ty of such publications is highly variable\, challenging standard approach
es to meta-analysis. Furthermore\, most investigators have focused on com
mon –rather than rare –variants. Financial barriers include the high
expense of genotyping relative to standard laboratory tests\, further comp
licated by limited intellectual property protection for pharmacogenomic te
sts. Technical barriers include physician knowledge\, as well as time del
ays in obtaining results. One possible implementation solution is a genom
ic prescribing system\, such as the one in development at the University o
 f Chicago (http://cpt.uchicago.edu/page/genomic-prescribing-system-gps).
