DESCRIPTION:A periodic Ising model is one endowed with interactions that a
 re invariant under translations of members of a full-rank sublattice L of 
 Z^2. We give\nan exact\, quantitative description of the critical temperat
 ure\, defined by the supreme of the temperatures at which the spontaneous 
 magnetization of\na periodic\, Ising ferromagnets is nonzero\, as the solu
 tion of a certain algebraic equation\, namely\, the condition that the spe
 ctral curve of the\ncorresponding dimer model on the Fisher graph has a re
 al node on the unit torus.\n
