DESCRIPTION:After 50 years of research and development\, the modern indust
rial laser takes on many forms. With high efficiencies\, power levels in t
he TW range\, and pulse widths below the magical electron-phonon timescale
s of materials\, the current capabilities of modern lasers are quite brea
thtaking. This talk will discuss the research currently being pursued with
in the Centre for Industrial Photonics\, and present a range of novel indu
strial applications that are set to transform the global manufacturing lan
dscape. \n\nBill is a Reader in Laser Engineering within the Cambridge Un
iversity Engineering Department and Director of the Centre of Industrial P
hotonics. His research is on the subjects of laser-matter interactions\, o
ptical engineering\, laser based manufacturing technologies\, and micro/na
no fabrication techniques. He is a member of the international advisory pa
nel of the National Laser Centre of South Africa\, a Fellow & Director of
the Laser Institute of America\, a Fellow of the IoP\, is CEO of Laser Fus
ion Technologies Ltd and advises industry and governments on a wide range
 of laser based manufacturing technologies.\n
