DESCRIPTION:At the height of the insurgency in Iraq the US deployed 5\,000
robots.\nIn the last 5 years UAVs or drones have taken out 75% of al-Qaed
a's\nmiddle to upper managers. US scientists are now working on designs\nt
hat will give the next generation of robots a 'consience' - a set of\nmora
l algorithms similar to the set of moral heuristics programmed\ninto us by
natural selection which we call a conscience\n\nRobotics will transform t
he face of war hollowing out its  existenial\ncore - the need for courage
\, risk taking and sacrifice and reducing\nsignificantly the human dimensi
on of decision making.\n\nThe question we might ask ourselves is not the f
amilar one - do we\nstill need war but a very unfamiliar and possibly more
disturbing one\n- how long will war continue to need us?\n\nChristopher C
oker is Professor of International Relations at the LSE Department of Inte
rnational Relations. He is interested in\, among other topics\, British f
oreign policy and British defence policy. He has previously published: \n\
