DESCRIPTION:Working memory\, the cognitive system that provides temporary
storage of information to support ongoing cognitive activities\, is now kn
own to play a key role in supporting children's learning. The phonological
loop component supports learning of new words\, and is impaired in develo
pmental disorders such as Specific Language Impairment that are characteri
sed by deficits in vocabulary acquisition. The central executive component
contributes more broadly to academic learning in curriculum areas such as
reading and maths. Recent methods for overcoming developmental deficits i
n working memory will be discussed.
